According to the report of the Technical Group on Estimation of Housing Shortage, an estimated shortage of 26.53 million houses during the Eleventh Five Plan (2007-12) provides a big investment opportunity. Marketing analysis pegs returns from reality in India at an average of 14% annually with a tremendous upsurge in commercial real estate. Further, the housing sector has been growing at an average of 34% annually. It is believed to be the next big thing after IT and predicted to become a US$ 280 billion industry by 2020,” the report said At present the sector is estimated to be around US$ 40 billion and will grow to US$ 78.6 billion by 2012.

In food and agro processing sector Uttar Pradesh is one of the three front running states in India. Agriculture contributes 30% in the SDP and employs 57% of the workforce. Fruits, vegetables and cereals grow in abundance in West Bengal. The state accounts for 30% of potatoes, 27% of pineapples, 12% of bananas and 16% of India’s rice production. Additionally fruits like mangoes, papays, guava and jackfruit and vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflowers, cabbage, brinjal, pumpkin, are available in plenty.

As poultry production is a prime example of a vertically integrated agricultural industry, with intensive rearing systems of birds of efficient feed conversion ratios and products of handy size and ready marketability, it is not surprising that it is currently showing the strongest growth in output of any category of meat. World-wide, it is a huge industry. Estimates of poultry populations are detailed in Table 1. The largest increase in poultry populations between 1979 and 1989 are in N&C America, S America & Asia. As a general rule, poultry populations in developing countries are rising at a faster rate than in developed countries.
